لما ضرب مالك بن النسر الكندي بسيفه الحسين على رأسه بعد أن شتمه ألقى الحسين ( عليه السلام ) قلنسوته ودعا بخرقة وقلنسوة ، فشد رأسه بالخرقة ولبس القلنسوة واعتم عليها ، رجع عنه شمر ومن معه إلى مواضعهم ، فمكث هنيئة ، ثم عاد وعادوا إليه وأحاطوا به ، فخرج عبد الله بن الحسن من عند النساء وهو غلام لم يراهق ، فشد حتى وقف إلى جنب عمه الحسين ( عليه السلام ) ، فلحقته زينب لتحبسه فأبى ، فقال لها الحسين : " إحبسيه يا أخية " ، فامتنع امتناعا شديدا ، وقال : والله لا أفارق عمي . وأهوى بحر بن كعب إلى الحسين بالسيف ، فقال الغلام : ويلك يا بن الخبيثة أتقتل عمي ؟ فضربه بحر بالسيف ، فاتقاه الغلام بيده فأطنها إلى الجلد فإذا هي معلقة ، فنادى الغلام : يا أماه ، فأخذه الحسين ( عليه السلام ) وضمه إليه ، وقال : " يا بن أخي اصبر على ما نزل بك ، واحتسب في ذلك الخير ، فإن الله يلحقك بآبائك الصالحين " ثم رفع الحسين ( عليه السلام ) يديه إلى السماء وقال : " اللهم أمسك عليهم قطر السماء وامنعهم بركات الأرض ، اللهم فإن متعتهم إلى حين ففرقهم بددا ، واجعلهم طرائق قددا ، ولا ترضي الولاة عنهم أبدا ، فإنهم دعونا لينصرونا ، ثم عدوا علينا فقتلونا "
